Katie Porter Backs ‘Defund The Police’ Despite Pelosi’s Walk Back

Democrat party leaders has stated the party is not aligned with the ‘defund the police’ movement, and Democrats like but ultra-liberal Porter have yet to reverse their stance.

Leader of the House Democrats Nancy Pelosi reversed the Democratic party supports of the ‘defund the police’ movement. Orange County’s Rep. Katie Porter has not made any statement reversing her support for the ‘defund the police’ movement.

Despite Pelosi’s walk back of the party’s support, Porter still supports the progressive push to defund the police, and has leaned into the movement in the past.

“We cannot tolerate officers’ continued failure to keep people safe in their custody or police in ways that reinforce racial injustices,” Porter tweeted in 2020.

Porter also voted against House Resolution 1280 in March 2021. The resolution condemned the ‘defund the police’ crowd.

“It increases accountability for law enforcement misconduct, restricts the use of certain policing practices, enhances transparency and data collection, and establishes best practices and training requirements,” H.R. 1280 reads.

Pelosi said in an interview with ABC News, “That is not the position of the Democratic Party”. “Community safety, to protect and defend in every way, is our oath of office,” said Pelosi.

Pelosi took her words a step further by paraphrasing Democratic New York Congressman Ritchie Torres. She said that “defund the police is dead.”

President Joe Biden reiterated Pelosi’s declaration at an event in New York with city Mayor Eric Adams.

“The answer is not to defund the police,” Biden said at the event.
