The Newport Beach City Council voted to approve a resolution asking the California Redistricting Commission to add Newport Beach in a Congressional District that includes cities from San Clemente to Seal Beach. The vote was bipartisan and unanimous. Mayor Pro Tem Kevin Muldoon originally proposed the resolution. He says it makes sense to add Newport Beach to this coastal district because of the city’s close ties to the beach and other communities in the area.
Newport Beach Mayor Brad Avery agreed with Muldoon in a letter to the Commission. He is “certain that, due to the common interests, concerns, and challenges these coastal cities share, the most prudent solution would be to consolidate the cities into one Congressional District.”
