In the midst of the recent school shootings which are becoming more and more of a concern each day, San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond has been approaching new methods of keeping students safe.

Desmond stated in a tweet it is clear that mental health awareness is a great start in decreasing gun violence in our schools.

“[The] past two years has caused more and more kids to become isolated. It’s imperative that we provide resources and address the root cause of the violence in our country,” Desmond said.

By a unanimous vote, the San Diego Board of Supervisors approved two measures proposed by Desmond to promote school safety.

The first measure directs the use of county funds towards smaller districts with less resources. These funds will be used to improve school security in these schools. Local governments will be working with district staff to determine where more school safety and student protection is needed.

The second measure approved by the board is to fund a program called Camp LEAD. The camp will focus its attention on students’ mental health and well-being. Research has revealed that most school shooters have a background of mental health issues, bullies, not having friends in school, and more.

The camp is designed to pair high risk students with mentors and counselors and introduces students to law enforcement as well. Camp LEAD promotes empathy, self-awareness, school attendance, and academic performance.

Supervisor Jim Desmond continues to encourage school safety and student protections in many ways, from using county funds to promoting mental health awareness in students.
