Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) says DOJ investigations targeting Trump's political opponents should be treated as presumptively illegitimate — speaking out after Gov. Gavin Newsom disclosed that he and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, are under federal investigation.

Schiff, who spent nearly six years as a federal prosecutor with the Justice Department, told KCRA-3's Ashley Zavala that it is "unthinkable that the president would be directing prosecutions from the White House." The DOJ's public integrity section has been investigating potential crimes related to Siebel Newsom's tax filings, working alongside the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California in Sacramento.

The probe, which dates back to early 2025, is one of several federal investigations surrounding Newsom, his office, and his family. Separately, Newsom's former chief of staff, Dana Williamson, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud, wire fraud, filing a false tax return, and making false statements to a federal agent. A source familiar with the Siebel Newsom investigation said it originated from "whistleblowers and local sources in California" and was not directed by Trump or DOJ leadership in Washington, D.C.

Newsom, a prominent critic of President Trump and a widely discussed potential 2028 presidential contender, has characterized the investigation as a politically motivated attack. Schiff himself was previously the subject of a DOJ inquiry into allegations of mortgage fraud. Should federal investigations into political opponents face greater public scrutiny? 👇
